According to Colombia’s Ministry of Health, 9 locally-acquired confirmed cases of Zika virus infection have been reported in the metropolitan area of Cartagena, Bolívar Department, since October 16, 2015. Zika virus had not previously been reported in this country. Zika virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a flavivirus from the same family as dengue and West Nile viruses. Travelers are advised to practice daytime insect precautions.
